Manage Mobile Solutions Through a Single Interface
Enterprise data management systems can quickly become unmanageable as they grow and require higher levels of functionality. In order to help network administrators take control of data, DataSplice has created a data management tool called the Administration Client. It enables network administrators to maintain data integrity and access permissions during mobile use.
The Administration Client is used to configure the default settings for how mobile users access data. This means that all settings for mobile devices are pushed to each handheld user once they connect to the server via a log-in. User-interface configurations are automatically synchronized with a handheld once a remote user is signed in.
So what is the real benefit for network administrators? DataSplice eliminates the need to configure each mobile device separately prior to use by each employee. For installations with multiple remote users, there is no need to spend hours synching up each handheld individually. All data settings are centralized within the Administration Client to support speed and convenience of data management.
Automatically Configure Software Installations and Upgrades
Picture this scenario: You just bought 100 new handhelds for your latest mobile project, and are ready to configure them for remote users. After spending the morning creating settings on each handheld individually, you realize it might take days instead of minutes to get workers mobile and working as planned.
The DataSplice Windmill software provisioning service makes managing network installations easy for both administrators and end users. With Windmill you can:
- Automatically install and upgrade software over any network connection, including wireless and ActiveSync.
- Maintain device configurations, such as network settings.
- Repair software after battery failures (requires a storage card or other persistent storage).
- Automatically detect and install the correct software versions for all types of Windows CE, as well as desktop versions of Windows.
- Install any software needed on remote devices in addition to the DataSplice Remote Client.
Windmill makes it easy to manage software installations regardless of the number of end users, and dramatically reduces time spent configuring handhelds manually.
Define Views and Permissions
Views are the "heart" of DataSplice technology. The Administration Client is used to configure everything about views: creation, remote data access permissions, and the rules used to modify critical data.
The DataSplice administration interface makes it easy for any network or database administrator to quickly setup mobile data access, without extensive database training. In fact, defining simple SQL (query) statements for new views is the only task that requires any specific database knowledge.
After views have been clearly defined, the Administration Client can then be used to create permissions for users and groups. Permissions are detailed information parameters that dictate who can use and edit certain information. Administrators can quickly establish permissions to support and protect data integrity out in the field.
DataSplice maintains its own list of internal users and groups. It also has plug-in modules that enable it to authenticate information from external sources, such as Windows Domains or MAXIMO® software.
Database Access
DataSplice uses connection profiles to define frequently used data sources available via remote access. Connection profiles make it easy to change the source of all data views.
This is extremely helpful when moving from a test bed to a full production environment, for example. The source of data is simply changed for all users through the Administration Client tool.
The Administration Client can completely configure how data is handled in DataSplice, including:
- Setting text edit permissions per user or group, such as insert, update and delete.
- Marking particular fields as read-only.
- Specifying valid data for individual fields.
- Setting specific actions to take place as a result of data modification, such as calling database procedures, sending email, and running eternal applications.

Delegate Administrative Tasks
With larger applications, it is helpful to split up administrative tasks between multiple groups in order to streamline system administration. Additional users can be added to the Administrators group, allowing these accounts to connect with the Administration Client and manage the system.
The head administrator can also establish clear data access restrictions for appointed administrators. Some parameters include:
- Restricting user from modifying a subset of available views.
- Preventing addition or deletion of views.
- Allowing a user to only modify relationships and/or specific criteria.
See the Administration Manual for a detailed list of the permissions that can be set for administrators.
Monitor Active Server Connections
In addition to maintaining basic system configurations, the Administration Client also monitors actions taking place through the DataSplice Server. This includes viewing the status of connected clients, observing active sessions, and managing open database handles. Administrators can also close stale connections, revoke offline sessions, and send necessary correspondence to users.
