How to select a handheld

We have tested several handhelds, and evaluated them based on four key criteria: durability, ruggedness, reliability, and price.

Choosing a Handheld

Your organization has several options of hardware to choose from to run DataSplice software. However, there are several factors that you should consider before making a final hardware purchase. Be sure to assess the work environment, method of data entry, weather conditions, ease-of-use and required functionality before choosing a specific hardware model.

Key elements to consider when evaluating hardware options:

  • Construction
  • Form Factor (Display)
  • Keyed Data Input
  • Scanned Data Input
  • Communications
  • Charging/Docking Station
  • Other: Compatibility with RFID, GIS, etc.
We have tested mobile hardware from the following companies. Each company and model have unique characteristics that must be considered when choosing the equipment right for your application. Refer to the summary pages for each company to see the handhelds we have tested and/or recommend. Please contact a member of the DataSplice sales team for information on special pricing

Questions to ask when choosing a handheld

Check out the Q&A below or contact a member on the DataSplice sales team.

Q: Do you require a rugged model?

Lightweight handhelds may be less expensive, but cannot endure consistent rough or outdoor use. They are also easily affected by severe temperatures and weather conditions. A rugged handheld will survive these elements, and is available with both numeric and alpha/numeric key pad.

Q: Do you require a barcode scanner?

Barcode scanning is a feature available on most handhelds. However, not all handhelds work with scanned data in the same way. We have tested several handhelds, and can help you choose an option that enables you to work with specific labels and CMMS system requirements.

Q: Do you need a keyboard built in?

While the DataSplice client offers a built-in screen touch pad, users may find an external keyboard or number keypad more efficient for data entry. PDAs can also accept input from keyboard attachments. Many handhelds also come with numeric or alphanumeric key pads.

Q: How much memory do you require?

A DataSplice professional will help you determine the amount of memory you will need and type of removable memory to choose based on your work processes. We highly recommend units utilizing a removable memory card, such as a SmartDisk or Compact Flash card. This  essential add-on provides memory backup in case the handheld breaks or the batteries lose power.

Q: Black and White or Color Screen and screen size?

We generally recommend color screens are very clear and easy to read, and are good for any types of work tasks.

Other items to consider:

  • What type of docking station do you use?
  • What type of wireless network will be used to transfer the information?
  • Will you be working with batch data?
  • Do you have special imaging requirements such as RFID?
